Someone Sent Me a GIF & I Turned It Into a Crochet Bag

There are many moments in life when we discover something we love. For me, that love was crochet. But the interesting part of my story is that I didn’t start my crochet business in my twenties or even my thirties. I started it at 45 years old.
For years, crochet was simply something I enjoyed doing quietly. It was my way of slowing down, creating something with my hands, and finding joy in the simple rhythm of yarn and stitches. I never imagined that this hobby would slowly grow into a small handmade crochet business where I would create custom crochet products, handmade crochet bags, crochet flowers, amigurumi toys, and personalized crochet gifts for customers across India.
Crochet Is More Than Just a Product
When people search online for handmade crochet products in India, they usually see finished items — a crochet bag, a toy, a bouquet of crochet flowers, or maybe a scrunchie. But crochet doesn’t really begin there. Every crochet creation starts with an idea.
Sometimes someone sends me a reference image they found online.Sometimes it’s an idea they saw on Pinterest. And sometimes, it’s just a message that says: "Can you make this?"
Many crochet businesses specialize in just one category — like crochet flowers, crochet amigurumi toys, or crochet accessories. And that works well for many creators. But for me, crochet has always been about exploring possibilities and continuously challenging myself. I enjoy the challenge of turning an idea into something real — even when there’s no pattern or tutorial to follow.
When I got a GIF with the question, "aunty, can you make this?"
One of the most memorable requests I received started with something unexpected. A customer sent me a GIF over WhatsApp. In that animation, there was a cute panda holding a pig-shaped sling bag. It looked adorable, playful and unique and the customer simply asked: "Can you make this pig sling bag?"
At that moment, everything depended on imagination and experimentation.I studied the GIF carefully, pausing it frame by frame to understand the shape of the pig bag and how it might translate into crochet. Questions started forming in my mind:
How should the pig bag be structured?
How do I make it strong enough to work as a sling bag?
What stitches would make the pig face look expressive?
There was a lot of trial and error involved.
Some stitches had to be undone and reworked. Shapes had to be adjusted. Small details needed experimentation. But slowly, the design started to come together. Check it out here: Crochet Pig Sling Bag 🐖
When I shared the final result online, the response surprised me. People loved how different and creative the bag looked. Within a short time, two more customers placed orders for the same pig sling bag, simply because they had never seen something like it before.
That moment reminded me why I enjoy crochet so much - it isn’t about following patterns but it's the joy of creating something that didn’t exist before. One of the most beautiful parts of running a custom crochet business is that every order carries a story.
It’s Never Too Late to Start Something Creative
Starting a crochet business at 45 years old taught me something important:
Creativity doesn’t have an age limit. Sometimes we discover our passions later in life and that’s perfectly okay. In fact, life experience often makes creativity richer.
Looking back, I’m grateful that I decided to follow something I loved. Because today, every crochet piece I create connects me with people who appreciate handmade art, creativity, and thoughtful gifts.
If You Ever Have an Idea…
Just reach out to me. We can figure out how to turn that idea into something handmade. Because sometimes the most beautiful crochet creations begin with a simple thought:
"I wonder if this can be made with yarn."
